A Beginner’s Guide To Fortnite

This will be mainly for people that are new or are not doing well in the current season. I will be talking about the good and bad parts of every named location, the best weapons to find in game, different types of loot pools and chests, and more! Hope you enjoy it πŸ™‚

Map

So, the map is pretty big. Currently, it has 20 named locations. These locations have the best loot drops in the map, but because of how obvious you can see them on the map, they get attention. The more loot it has, the more people drop there. Here are the pros and cons for each location:

Location Pros Cons
Junk Junction Great Metal and Wood, Decent Loot Far Corner of Map, Storm Chasing
Snobby Shores Decent Loot and Mats Storm Chasing
Pleasant Park Great Loot and Great Mats Populated Location
The Block Special Chest, Always Good Mats Changes Every Week
Loot Lake Centre of Map, Great Loot Not Mats, Water Slows you Down
Lazy Lagoon Great Mats and Loot Water Slows you Down
Retail Row Really Good Loot Populated Area
Shifty Shafts Decent Mars, Near Bigger Locations Small Loot
Lonely Lodge Good Shield, Wood, Good Loot Storm Chasing
Salty Springs Middle of Map Small, Populated Location
Dusty Divot Great Loot, Fantastic Mats, Centre Loads will go mid game
Polar Peak Massive High Ground, Good Loot Mountains will mess you up in the end
Happy Hamlet Good Loot, Good Wood Storm Chasing
Frosty Flights Fantastic Rotation, Good Metal, Good Loot OK Mats
Paradise Palms Good Loot and Mats Storm Chasing
Lucky Landing Good Loot, Average Mats Storm Chasing
Fatal Fields Good Wood and Brick OK Loot
Haunted Hills Average Everything Storm Chasing
Sunny Steps Good Loot, Good Rotation OK Mats
Tilted Towers 40 Chests, great Mats EVERYONE GOES HERE

Here is the map right now πŸ™‚

Types Of Chests

There are 6 types of chests and loot sources. Here they are, with what they give:

Ammo Box: Will be A certain amount of ammo for every type of weapon (medium, light, shells, heavy, rockets)

Chest: Will give 30 mats (either wood, brick or metal), any weapon, except for a few (Rockets), and a consumable/item, like potions or healing items

Supply Drop: These will drop throughout the game. Each will give a legendary item, with traps, mats and items/healing items

Supply Llama: Will give 200/200/200 mats, Along with healing items, items and traps. 3 Spawn every game.

Legendary Chest: Only one spawns, in the Block. It will always spawn. It has a legendary weapon, along with other items and traps

Treasure Map Chest: Only way to get one is if you find a “X” with the Treasuere chest. This is what it will give:

  • Solo: 2 Legendary Weapons, 1 Chug Jug
  • Duos: 2 Legendary Weapons x2 (It will give 2 of the same weapons), 1 Chug Jugs
  • Trios/Squad: 2 Legendary Weapons x 3, 1 Chug Jugs

So, in part 2, i will be going through what a game of Fortnite will be like for a new player, as well as giving tips that will (hopefully) help both new players, and players having trouble in Season 8. Keep in mind that i am posting this during the 8.20 content update, so if there are new things that i am not talking about, this is why. Also, if you are a veteran, chances are you will definitely not need this, but be free to give me some constructive criticism or more tips πŸ™‚ I think the best thing to talk about is that Creative mode and Team Rumble are super useful for Practising and learning new thing. Creative is useful because you can practise with friends, and no one will attacking you if playing alone. Team Rumble is good, because it gives you a chance to practise in the map while plying in a casual gamemode.

I am now going to walkthrough a normal game:

So, you will spawn on the spawn island. This is a small island that everyone spawns in before the game starts. You can collect mats, collect guns and build. Before the game starts, the map will show where the bus is going to go through. It is always random. The location closest to the beginning of the buses’ journey will always be the hottest. So , if you are going for a win, you might want to land at a colder spot. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to land on the other side of the map, it just means that you should land where the bus is not going through.Use the marker when the bus is moving to show how far the location (that you want to land to) is. This will help you get a better landing. Also remember you can deploy your glider before it forces you to.

Once you have landed to your location, start looking for weapons and items. For a new items, it is best if you have 2 slots for heals. More experienced players would probably use 4 weapons or 3 weapons and an item, but you will need 2 healing items. Here is my selection of items you should have in your inventory

Assault Rifle Shotgun SMG Shield Item Health Item
Assault Shotgun Sniper Rifle Shield Item Health Item
Assault Shotgun Explosive Weapon Shield Item Health Item

When I first started playing, these were the 3 Inventory Combos i would use. ARs and Shotgun are a HUGE must for new players. This doesn’t mean that these will work with you, but this is my choice for new players Another thing you will need is mats. Building is what makes this game way different to other Battle Royale game, along with the cartoon art style. Trees are really good for wood. The little Flat Rocks are really good for brick. Scrap metal and kitchen furniture are really good for metal. You won’t need to get max materials every game before your first fight. Getting kills will give you the mats that the enemy had. Destroying 1 hit objects will give good amount of mats. Just because something is big, doesn’t mean it will give you a lot of mats.If someone landed with you, and you fight them straight away, a good tip is to quickly get at least 50-60 mats. Then, in your first fight, you will be able to build a ramp, along with walls all around it. It will give to a height edge, and will protect you from all sides. If you killed the enemy, Congrats!

Now, the storm is what pushes everyone to a tiny, part of the map. This makes it easier to find enemies, and makes for a more intense final part. If you go into the storm, your screen will be purple, your health will decrease, and there will be rain drops hitting your HUD. When the storm gets to a certain size, it will begin to move inside the existing storm. When it closes, the storm will open up, while still getting smaller. There are 9 circles, and it starts to move into the storm at circle 5. Here are the times and damage: ( I got this information from here: )Β https://fortnite.gamepedia.com/The_Storm_(Battle_Royale))

Circles Wait Time Shrink Time Storm Damage
Storm Circle 1 3 Minutes 20 Seconds 3 Minutes 1 Per Second
Storm Circle 2 2 Minutes 2 Minutes 1 Per Second
Storm Circle 3 1 Minute 30 Seconds 1 Minutes 30 Seconds 2 Per Second
Storm Circle 4 1 Minute 20 Seconds 1 Minute 10 Seconds 5 Per Second
Storm Circle 5 50 Seconds 1 Minute 8 Per Second
Storm Circle 6 30 Seconds 1 Minute 10 Per Second
Storm Circle 7 N/A 55 Seconds 10 Per Second
Storm Circle 8 N/A 45 Seconds 10 Per Second
Storm Circle 9 N/A 75 Seconds 10 Per Second

You will most likely not go to storm circles 6-9 on your first games. Those circles are usually for arena matches and tournaments/cups.

So now you’ve looted, you have lasted through storm circle 1, and you may have a kill or 2. Great! Killing people in the game is not the biggest priority. You can still win with no kills. You win by playing as tactically as possible. While killing people will give you mats, and better weapons, you don’t have to get 10 kills every game. It is just better to get kills as you are having more battles and fights, and having more fun.

When it gets to Circle 4 or 5 consider building a 1×1. 1x1s are towers that are as wide and long as a floor build. If you want to build a big tower, make the bottom thicker, so your tower doesn’t get destroyed by rockets and ARs If you have a lot of brick or metal, build it with those:

  • Wood: 150 Health
  • Brick: 300 Health
  • Metal: 500 Health

You will always have a couple of players per lobby that are really good at the game, so fight each fight like your attacking the best player. This will make you less surprised if the enemy is actually good, and will keep you focused on just killing him. When you go into your final fight with the last player, high ground is key. Build a ramp rush, placing a wall in front of each ramp to protect it. The last fight is usually the hardest one, and because there are no one else to attack you, you don’t have to be wary about anyone else. Also, when the fight stops, you can’t escape. You either win or die. Play tactically. Don’t make silly risks. A good shotgun can insta-kill you if the enemy hits a lucky shot. When you hit your shotgun shot, combo it by either placing a wall to protect yourself from their next move, or by equipping your AR or SMG to laser the enemy. Also be wary of the storm moving. Never stay in one place, as the storm will be constantly moving

Hopefully with these few tips, you can win your first game, or win a game after a while. If you did, CONGRATULATIONS.

I hope that this guide helped. If veterans are reading this, Please add more advise or correct any mistakes i made. Thank you for spending your time reading this. Have a good day :).
